Holy place Gangotri pilgrimage in India

I have heard about the beauty and holy aura of Gangotri. Oh! Please pilgrimage is not included in my idea for a vacation. Gaumukh, Tapovan and Bhaironghati sounds great fun. One thing is for sure you need to be fit and boy I need to carry good shoes and appropriate gear if I want to try trekking and rafting! Now I know the secret why our holy sages used to be so fit and active!
It seems one needs to be physically fit and strong for a trip to Gangotri. As there are so many places of religious significance in the vicinity a trip to Gangotri is bound to be an adventure cum pilgrimage. But then pilgrimages and the young do not go together. I wonder if many young people undertake this trip.
